“Elysium”---The dream of “Medical Pod” is near or far?

I missed the first 5 minutes or so of Elysium. Anyway when I started watching it, I was drawn to the story of the protagonist, Max played by Matt Damon. Max has only 5 days to live after suffering from a radiation accident. However, halfway through the film---after Secretary of Homeland Security played by Jodie Foster was killed, exactly---I felt that I was watching another different film from one I had been watching at the start.
Elysium is set in 2154 when the life of the human is polarized, and about the struggle of an ordinary man who has been involved in the conspiracy of a worldwide scale. Disappointingly, however, by the end of the film, it became another SF action film where the hero and the enemy (played by Sharlto Copely) armored in metal suits fights on the catwalk decorated by cherry blossoms’ branches. After all, the climax of this SF thriller came down to a hand-to-hand sword fight with robot tastes like historical SF films or Japanese SF animation.

In general, I do not deny that Elysium is a watchable film, but something seems not to fit for becoming SF film with a solid plot. Another example was the scene when the corporation CEO, played maliciously by William Fichtner, was to transport important computer data secretly from Elysium’s security system. He was using the keyboard of a desktop computer and inputting source code simply and diligently. After that manipulation, the CEO downloaded the data into an implant in his brain, instead of an external flash drive. In a future world where humans are living in a space colony comfortably and “Medical Pod” can cure any serious diseases, this old fashioned way of data download by this dominant CEO is a little bit cute.
For that scene, some excuse can be come up with. As he was hacking the data illegally, he might have taken a basic method intentionally. Or, as he was just a businessman, not a computer professional, that method might have been the simplest and most obvious for him.
Anyway, in Elysium, the level of science and technology in 2154 looks to be slightly incoherent. Some scenes (like computer manipulation by the CEO) are strangely familiar for us. It seems to be afraid of using imagination freely on our familiar technology, like computer (Or is it the result of consideration for “reality”?). However, on the other hand, another scenes (like “Medical Pod”) are fantastic like a dream. “Medical Pod” is able to cure a dying girl’s disease with just some beams of light. What I have associated this idea with is a device in “The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)” when the dead alien, Klaatu was resuscitated back to life. Although some new words like ‘nanotechnology’ might be used for this film, the dream of “Medical Pod” has not changed from 60 years ago and been still able to give enjoyment to us. The “reality” of technology and the fantasy of technology---the both ideas exist without being combined in this film.
Sorry for changing the topic suddenly, but in Japanese SF manga comic “Cobra The Space Pirate”, the protagonist, Cobra was analyzing some data on the computer. The design of the computer was that of a grand piano; users pound the keys of the piano instead of a keyboard, playing a tune, and at the same time, interacting and analyzing the data. That quite inefficient, but fancy machine appeared in about 1980, and at that time, even desktop word processors were not widespread in Japan. The creator of “Cobra” was free to imagine and dream fantastic implementations of technology. In Elysium, I feel as if the more actualizing dreams technology is, the more hesitation is for the fantasy to go far. And that might be why only the parts not to be caught up with by technology like “Medical Pod” look dreamy and imaginative, I think. (18 Sep. 2014)

「エリジウム」---「医療用ポッド」の夢は近いのか、遠いのか？

最初の5分くらいは見逃してしまった。それはともかく、見始めたら、放射能事故で余命5日となってしまった、マット・デイモン演じる主人公がこれからどうなるのか？と、その物語に引き込まれた。しかし、映画の後半———正確には、ジョディ・フォスター演じるエリジウムの保安長官が死んでしまった後———何だか最初とは違う映画を見ているような・・・。
「エリジウム」は、人類の暮らしが二分化した2154年を舞台に、世界的規模の陰謀に図らずも巻き込まれてしまった平凡な男の戦いを描いた作品である。が、映画の終わりには、桜の花の枝で飾られた作業用通路で、戦闘用スーツで装甲したヒーローと敵役（シャールト・コプリー）が戦うSFアクション映画になっていた。結局のところ、このSFスリラーのクライマックスは、これまでのSF映画や日本のアニメーションのような、刀とロボット仕立ての肉弾戦に尽きてしまった。それで何だかがっかりした。
全般的に、「エリジウム」が見て楽しい映画であることは否定しない。しかし、しっかりしたプロットを備えたSF映画であるためには、上述のように、何かしっくり来ないもののある作品だった。他の例を上げれば、エリジウムを運営する会社の社長（ウィリアム・フィクナーが憎々しく演じる）が、エリジウムのセキュリティ・システムの重要データを、こっそり持ち去ろうとするシーンがある。社長は、そのデータをシステムからダウンロードするために、せっせとデスクトップ・パソコンのキーボードを叩いて、地味にコーディングしている。そしてそのパソコン操作を経て、ダウンロードしたデータを、フラッシュドライブがわりに自分の脳のインプラントに保存する。スペースコロニーで人々が快適に暮らし、「医療用ポッド」を使えばどんな難病でも治癒できる時代に、この大会社の社長が、昔ながらの方法でデータ抜き取りの作業をする姿は、なんだかかわいい。
このシーンについて言えば、彼は不正にデータハッキングしているのであり、だからあえて原始的な方法を使っているのだ、とか、彼はビジネスマンであってコンピューターの専門家ではないので、一番シンプルでわかりやすい方法しかとれなかったのだ、などと説明することはできる。
しかしやはり、2154年の科学技術力について、若干ちぐはくな印象を受けざるを得ない。この映画では、ある部分（社長によるパソコン操作のシーンのような）は妙に卑近に表現されている。まるでコンピューターのような私達の身近な技術に対して、自由に想像力を使うことを恐れているかのようである（あるいは、作品に「リアリティ」を持たせようとした結果なのだろうか？）。しかしその一方、他の部分（「メディカル・ポット」のような）では、「どうしたらこんなことが」というような、夢みたいなことが描かれている。映画の「医療用ポッド」は、余命わずかという女の子の病気を、光を浴びせるだけで直すような機械だが、ここから私が連想したのは、1951年の映画「地球の静止する日」で、一度死んだ宇宙人クラトゥを生き返らすことのできた宇宙船内の装置である。「エリジウム」では、ナノテクノロジーなどという新しい言葉が使われるかもしれないが、この「医療用ポッド」の夢は、60年前の夢とあまり変わっていない気がする。そして今回の作品の中でも、いまだに見る者を楽しませてくれる。技術の「リアリティ」と技術の奇想天外な夢———「エリジウム」では、この両方の着想が混じり合うことなく存在してしまっている。
唐突で恐縮だが、日本のSF漫画「コブラ」で、主人公の宇宙海賊コブラがコンピューターを使ってデータ解析をする場面がある。そのコンピューターはグランドピアノの形をしていて、キーボードのかわりに鍵盤を叩くようになっている。データ解析しながら一曲弾けるわけだが、この極めて非効率で夢のある機械が登場したのは1980年頃で、日本ではまだワープロ（ワードプロセッサ）さえ普及していない時代だった。「コブラ」の作者は、技術の奇想天外な展開を自由に夢み、想像した。「エリジウム」を見て感じたことは、技術が夢を現実のものにするにつれて、空想が遠慮をしてしまっているかのようだ、と。だから、「医療用ポッド」のような技術の追いついていない部分だけが、夢のようで想像的でいられるのだろうか、とそんなことを思ったのだった。（2014年9月18日）
